Dear NCTD Volunteer,

The NCTD Events Committee is excited to offer a free continuing education “open floor” event for volunteer teams – humans and dogs – on May 4, 2024.

Location: 4 On The Floor Dog Training Center, 5530 Randolph Road, Rockville, MD 20852

Kelly Citrin, NCTD board member, is the founder and lead trainer.

Topic: First Aid for Dogs

Presenter: Dr. Katie Malehorn, a practicing veterinarian who has worked in shelters, as an animal control agent, and practiced general and emergency medicine. Dr. Katie will teach basic first aid and CPR for dogs, including the Heimlich maneuver and how to bandage wounds. She will also review how to measure your dog’s breath rate, heart rate (and variability of heart rate), and blink rate. This will help us assess and understand when our dogs are calm, stressed, over aroused, or might need a break.

Schedule on Saturday May 4:

10:30 a.m. – noon First Aid presentation

Noon – 12:15 Break

12:15 – 1:00 p.m. Training games with handlers and dogs

RSVP:

If you plan to attend the open floor, please register on the NCTD website. Simply go to the website, click on Calendar, click on the May 4 Open Floor link. Scroll down the page, click on register and follow the instructions. There is no charge to attend.

Bring:

You are welcome to come with or without your dog. If you bring your dog, you should follow the same rules you would follow for a therapy visit – keep your dog on leash a few feet away from other dogs. Bring a water dish, blanket for your dog to lie on, and poop bags. And you may want to bring paper and pencil to take notes.
